Adoptables are buyable character designs, made by the artist and sold to a buyer. A majority of adoptables are pre-made, but in some cases an adopt can be tailored to the specifications of a buyer. Often these characters are for the buyer’s personal use, to be featured in galleries, future commissions, roleplay profiles, and stories.
While browsing through galleries, you may notice some images have a price tag, for example:
These are adoptable listings. All adoptables for sale can also be found in one convenient location. Through some method of communication (private notes on another site, the web contact form [coming soon], e-mail and instant messaging), the buyer would write something such as:
“Greetings, I am
* Telling me who you are on another website is greatly recommended so that no one else can steal or claim the adoptable. This is a very real thing that happens in the adoptable community, and giving me a URL allows me to create a public receipt and proof that the adoptable has been transferred to you, the buyer.
Adoptable inquiries should get a prompt response, within 48 hours. However, life does happen and sometimes a message may be missed. I encourage anyone to ask again if for some reason I haven’t responded.
If the adoptable is available for sale, the buyer will be provided with a paypal.me link to give the payment towards. Payments must be entered as no shipping required, and for goods and services. “Gift” payments will be immediately refunded. If a buyer does not have paypal, I will not be able to complete the sale.
Payments must be made within 24 hours and no holds or reserves will be given past this mark. A buyer that fails to pay will have their opportunity to purchase the adoptable passed on to the next potential buyer. However, there are many adoptables that do not sell for days, so even if a payment is not ready, there may still be a chance to get to buy the adoptable anyways.
After payment is made, the adoptable listing will be updated and should look like this:
Adoptables can be used practically anywhere you would post art, or profiles. Here is an example of how an adoptable may be put to use:
What happens to the adoptable from here on is up to the buyer. Some will resell or trade the character to get another character they want. Others will keep the character, or even have the character be their fursona or persona. Some may even use the characters for projects, though it is not recommended to use them in commercial projects.
You get permission to repost and use the adoptable on websites such a tumblr, twitter, furaffinity, f-list, and so on. I still retain the copyright to the image of the adoptable, so that I can continue to display the art in my galleries. Some people have explained to me that you can’t copyright the idea of a character in particular, and I do not have a good understanding if and how someone might be able to copyright the design and protect it as their own intellectual property. I would recommend consulting a lawyer if you want to copyright the adoptable for whatever reason.
Some websites like furaffinity and f-list recognize the idea of character ownership, and will address character theft if someone else takes your adoptable. A lot of the adoptable market works on the “honor system” in lieu of legal protections.
Absolutely! You can edit it however you like. I am not one of those artists that forbids changing the adoptable. However, if you want me to edit the adoptable in some way, it will be charged as a commission.
Oh yeah. It’s really not my business what’s done with the adoptable. Other artists may forbid something like killing the adoptable character or involving it in weird kinks, but I don’t really mind. I will mention that I don’t particularly endorse how the adoptable may be used after the sale (for example, if someone wanted to use the adoptable to promote a hateful ideology, that’s on them and I have nothing to do with that).
Yes, even at a profit. However, you may want to have the new owner message me, so that I can update the listing.
Please e-mail me with who you got the adoptable from, and some receipt of the transaction. You will also need to get the owner to verify the sale or trade.
I can design a character from scratch to your specifications. This is treated as the price of a regular commission, plus a surcharge for the designing. Please be very clear on how you want your adoptable to look like. If I have to make more than one edit to the adoptable, it will be listed as publicly for sale the commission will be canceled. I’ve been dealing with some very picky people, and I won’t be giving much leeway for that to happen again.
